About Live in caregiver program
In Canada there are limited numbers of Canadian citizens or permanent residents willing to live in the employer’s home and care for children or elderly. To cover that shortage The LIC Program was created by the Canadian Government on April 27, 1992. The LIC Program brings temporary residents to Canada as live-in employees to work without supervision in a private household to care for children, seniors or people with disabilities to cover the shortage of such workers in Canada. In exchange foreign nannies and caregivers may apply for permanent resident status within four years of arrival in Canada, after completing two years of employment as live-in caregivers.
The Live-in caregiver program is unique opportunity to change your future and future of your close family. It is also a very important step you are taking and you should think hard about how you will proceed. Do your due diligence. Ask questions before you encounter a problem. Think of the next three years as an investment – if you do it right, it pays off.
You will be working in a close relationship with your employer, live in their home. You will become a part of their life and they will be your extended family for some time. Treat them like you would treat your family. Nobody is perfect – neither are you nor is your future employer. With a lot of goodwill and tolerance, most of the problems can be overcome. That applies to both parties.
One of the biggest problems with the program is lack of information. If you don’t know what to expect, your expectations may be too high. Or you may not be aware of your rights and stay in a job that is clearly not good. Get information. Learn about your rights. Do your duties with diligence. If you find the right balance, you will have a good experience in Canada and the three years will pass faster than you think.
