Obligations of Nanny

Every employer will have different ideas of the work you are supposed to do on the job. Ideally, everything will be spelled out in your employment contract.

The employment contract is a binding agreement between you and the employer. Make sure that it covers all areas of concern – how many hours per week are you supposed to work, what is the salary, how much vacation do you get and when you can take it, which days in the week will be your days off, etc.

Your obligations to the employer are also spelled out in the contract:

  • You have to start work on time
  • You have to follow the instructions from your employer
  • You have to be diligent in your duties. If you are not sure how to do the task, ask. If you are not sure if you can do what you are asked for, tell the employer.

The most common reason for unhappiness on the job is lack of communication. Talk to your employer; tell them what bothers you and what you really like. Ask them to do the same.

Your contract will state the length of employment and how to leave the job for various reasons. Remember the main reason why you are in Canada is your job and you are expected to fulfill the contract and stay on the job for the entire term. If you feel unhappy in the job and are not able to talk to your employer, you can talk to the Agency that found you the job (if you have one) to help you to solve the problem or look for another job and give your employer notice of termination.

You are, however, not allowed to work for another employer until you receive a new work permit.
