Steps in the process

Before you proceed with hiring a foreign Live in Caregiver you are obliged to make sure that there are no Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents who are available and Advertise the position on the Job Bank and other local mass media (e.g.Kjiji or Craig’s list) for a minimum 14 calendar days and keep the records of all applicants interested in the advertised position (e.g. CV’s, interview notes etc).

We highly recommend you proceed with the advertisement immediately as this might help you to find your nanny immediately or will save you at least 4weeks for processing the foreign live in caregiver.

If Canadian workers or permanent residents are not available, you can proceed and hire a foreign live in Caregiver.

Steps in the process to hire a foreign live-in caregiver:

  1. Advertise the position on HRSDC job bank (you will need to have a payroll account open with Canada Revenue Agency);
  2. Keep record of the responses to the advertisement;
  3. Select a caregiver;
  4. Prepare employment contract;
  5. Prepare the application for Labour Market Opinion (approval of your plan to hire a foreign worker) to HRSDC;
  6. Submit supporting forms and documents to HRSDC;
  7. Talk to HRSDC to confirm the information you provided in the application;
  8. Receive a positive Labour Market Opinion – approval from HRSDC;
  9. Send a copy of the Labour Market Opinion to the selected caregiver;

Your future employee will have to complete the following steps:

  1. Ensure that she qualifies for the program;
  2. Collect all required documents for her application for work permit;
  3. Have the documents translated and/or obtain certified copies of them;
  4. Prepare the application for work permit, supported by documents showing her qualifications, personal information, criminal record, etc.
  5. Attend an interview at the visa office or be interviewed over the phone (some countries);
  6. If the visa officer finds the caregiver to qualify, the caregiver will have to complete medical examination;
  7. If the results of the examination show that the applicant is in good health, the visa office will issue a multiple entry visa and a letter that the applicant may travel to Canada;
  8. At the port of entry, the caregiver will receive a work permit that will allow her to work for you only.
